2019 Advent Calendar – December 7: Detroit, Michigan, USA

Let’s travel to the city of Detroit, Michigan on Saturday, December 7. This large city in the Great Lakes region is located along the River Detroit that marks the border between the United States and Canada.

The image shows two different ways to use land. To the west on the American side, the territory is mostly urban. The metropolitan area, known as Metro Detroit, is home to 4.3 million people, making it the second-largest in the Midwest. The satellite image shows clearly both road systems that cross the city: the original French template, with avenues radiating from the waterfront, and true north–south roads typical to most American cities.

On the south bank of the Detroit River directly across from Detroit, the area is mostly dedicated to agriculture. Around the city of Windsor, Ontario, large fields of different patterns spread out.

Bruno, satellite imagery technician, LOVES this image from a graphic point of view: “Seen from satellite, the city structure is totally geometric which makes a great contrast with the curved shape of the Lake St. Clair. It has become my new wallpaper! »

And a big thank you to Bruno for preparing all the satellite images that illustrate this Advent Calendar!
