2019 Advent Calendar – December 9: Faiyum Oasis, Egypt

For December 9th, the whole PlanetObserver team takes you to the Faiyum oasis in Egypt. It is a depression in the desert immediately to the west of the Nile and south of Cairo. The oasis communicates with the Nile Valley through a canal derived from the Nile whose flow at the entrance to the Faiyoum has been regulated since Pharaonic times by locks.

Historically, Fayoum has had a great reputation for beauty and fertility: it produces many fruits (citrus fruits, dates, olives, grapes) and famous poultry. Even today it continues to be an important place for fruit and vegetable production.

If you are a card player, the shape of the oasis will probably remind you of a spade. This shows how nature, sometimes with the help of humans, can create features of great beauty.
