2019 Advent Calendar – December 1: Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia
Let’s get started with a satellite image of Australia. This is the Gulf of Carpentaria, a large, shallow sea on the northern coast of Australia, known to contain fringing reefs and isolated coral colonies. Off the coast of Queensland and along the Cape York Peninsula to the east, the Great Barrier Reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres. It is the world’s largest coral reef system!
All the way fringed with beautiful turquoise water, the coast becomes very rugged along Arnhem Land to the west. For those with a lot of imagination (like us!), we can almost guess a boar’s head on the western part of the Gulf.
We’re pretty fond on that image here at PlanetObserver. It combines colors that we love (the turquoise water) and amazing natural features. Enjoy! It is just the number 1 of a long series.
