2019 Advent Calendar – December 2: Southern Libyan Desert

We love it when satellite images turn into Art. This one is particularly stunning.

We’re in the Southern Libyan Desert, at the crossroads of four countries, Libya, Egypt, Sudan and Chad.

The colors of the desert literally explode in this image. The whole palette of ochres and reds is found, as in a painting by William Turner, known for his expressive colorisations and imaginative landscapes.

See that unusual shape on the eastern side of the image? It is a remote agricultural outpost in the desert based on central-pivot irrigation.
